SUMMARY:Opening Meet and Greet receptions for Environmental Exposure Glen Ediger
DESCRIPTION:Ediger brings Environmental Exposure to Carriage Factory Art Gallery \nGlen Ediger has gone by many monikers in his career – inventor\, designer\, author\, car enthusiast and now artist. \nEdiger’s latest creative venture has been a cooperative effort with Mother Nature. Ediger takes different types of metals and masks them with different natural elements or other metal shapes\, sets them outside to be exposed to the elements and lets nature take its course. Some pieces are left outside for just a few weeks and others for over a year. The results are stunning and as varied as the weather in Kansas. \nEdiger first got the idea when he saw a rusting car that had patterns left on the metal from rusting cans and thought “Could this be art?” \nEdiger’s philosophy about his environmental art is “Everything we do leaves an impression. Our actions\, whether intended or not\, create an effect on our environment and on our relationships. My art-form is an expression of that effect\, it intends to ‘expose’ both literally and figuratively the effects of our actions\, by creating a patina\, with rust and decay on to the medium\, literally creating the art on the exposed material.” \nLandscapes are the focus of much of Ediger’s work but through experimentation using different metals\, where he places the pieces to be exposed – close to a tree\, in direct sun\, etc. – and how long the piece is exposed\, he is able to achieve a variety of effects. \n“Sometimes\, the hardest thing is deciding when to bring the piece in\,” Ediger said. \nOnce he brings a piece in from the exposed elements\, he cleans it by using compressed air to remove any debris\, seals the metal and then mounts\, mats and frames the pieces using reclaimed lumber. \nForty of Ediger’s metalwork pieces are part of his upcoming show “Environmental Exposure” at Carriage Factory Art Gallery May 29-July 16. The show will kick off with three meet and greet events at the gallery – 6-8 p.m. Friday May 28\, 6-8 p.m. Saturday\, May 29 and 1-3 p.m. Sunday\, May 30. \nMore information about the show can be seen at carriagefactorygallery.com\, including a video of Ediger discussing his process and a visual catalog for the show.

SUMMARY:Whimsical Situations and Impossible Realities
DESCRIPTION:Conyers Whimsical Situations and Impossible Realities at Carriage Factory Art Gallery \nMcPherson artist Wayne Conyers is using his art to tackle his fears. Recently retired after 44 years of teaching art\, most recently at McPherson College\, Conyers compares his decision to retire to free falling. \nConyers explains his process in painting “Free Falling Series: Taking a Leap into the Great Unknown”: \n“I’m going to be in a freefall not knowing what in the world is going to happen\,” Conyers said pointing out elements in the painting. “This totem\, walking off the ledge\, that’s me. There’s people who will be noticing how I’m doing along the way. The monopoly house is my security that’s tumbling down into uncertainty.” \nHis painting series on free falling is part of his new show “Whimsical Situations and Impossible Realities” at the Carriage Factory Art Gallery in Newton through Oct. 12\, 2021. \nOne perk of retirement for Conyers is more time for painting. A piece that might have taken him years to complete in the past now take months\, which by Conyers’ measure is fast. \nIf you look closely at the paintings\, you’ll see why his work requires so much time. Each piece has thousands of tiny tri-color tiles painted in watercolors. His work is meticulous and filled with what he refers to as “eye-candy.” \n“One of the things that I’m very conscious of is the visual blending of colors rather than the physical blending of colors. I like to put several colors close to each other and then how does the eye blend those together to make a certain color or tone\,” Conyers said. \nIn addition to the free-falling series\, there are several additional themed series in the show – paintings based on the issue of appropriation\, his interest in theoretical physics\, personal issues and experiences and paintings just for fun. \nOn the subject of appropriation\, Conyers has borrowed from “Green Stripe” by Henri Matisse to create “Red Stripe.” The basic shape of the woman is similar\, but Conyers has definitely made it his own with incredibly detailed bits of color. \n“I have no problem with appropriating the images of others and making them mine in some way. Just copying\, that’s something else. Appropriation of images and working with those to make them personal\, is something I have a lot of fun with\,” Conyers said. \nConyers’ fascination with theoretical physics resulted in paintings like “When Six-Dimensional Matter Deflates\, It Produces Two-Dimensional Slabs of Exotic Matter with Red Strings.” Conyers has wrapped his head around string theory concepts and produced a visual interpretation. Another series within the theoretical physics theme is quantum chromodynamic fluctuations\, which Conyers described as “a study of the interaction between quarks and gluons. Since this takes place at the sub-atomic level\, I got the idea of doing a series based on reducing areas of my paintings to their most basic digital existence–a relationship of pixels.” \nThe five paintings known as Quantum Chromodynamic Fluctuations #1-5 have more of the appearance of a quilt than a complicated physics concepts but knowing the process that goes into them gives them meaning and depth. \n“Whimsical Situations and Impossible Realities” is on display in the Susan Koehn Gallery at Carriage Factory Art Gallery\, 128 E. Sixth St. in Newton through October 12\, 2021. More information is available at www.carriagefactoryartgallery.com. \n

SUMMARY:Comfort Stone Class with Shawn Delker
DESCRIPTION:Taking time to quietly sit and stitch is a gift to yourself and a way to cope in this high stress world. In this class we will wrap and stitch a stone to create an art piece that will delight your eyes as well as your touch. Make this delightful stone for yourself or to give away to friend in need of stress relief. We will use snippets of fabric\, needle\, and thread to wrap a stone leaving part of the stone exposed for touching. Then we will add beads and decorative stitch to your heart’s content.
