SUMMARY:Vernon Rickman Book
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe life and work of Newton-born artist Vernon Rickman is highlighted in “Vernon Rickman\, An Artful Life\,“ a book by Beverley Olson Buller. \nCarriage Factory Art Gallery published the book\, which was released in mid-February 2019. \nRickman was born in Newton in 1929\, the second son of Theodore J. and Mattie Jordan Rickman. While attending Newton High School\, art teacher Marie Orr encouraged and mentored him. After his high school graduation\, he studied art in Kansas City\, Missouri\, and Cleveland\, Ohio\, before serving in the Korean War. He later graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor’s degree in fine arts. \nRickman went on to join the Smithsonian and spent 20 years as a sculptor and artist there\, creating many of the exhibits for the Museum of Natural History. His work depicted humans during different eras of history and geography. He retired from the Smithsonian in the 1980s. \nAfter retirement\, Rickman continued painting and sculpting\, creating more than 300 oil paintings as well as sculptures and reliefs. Much of his work expresses the depth of suffering and human bondage. Longing and sorrow\, isolation and darkness\, the journey inward and outward are central themes of his art. \nRickman died in Newton on Dec. 27\, 2013. Carriage Factory Art Gallery is the sole sales broker for his paintings. \nThe Carriage Factory Art Gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday\, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. SUMMARY:Kids Art Carnival
DESCRIPTION:The final “Spring Into the Arts” activity will be the Downtown Art Carnival held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. May 30 at Sixth and Oak Streets in Newton. \n  \nThe event will feature activities for all ages\, with live music from the Bethel College Academy of Performing Arts’ Strings Tour Group\, food trucks and ice cream from Salted Creamery. \n  \nCarriage Factory Art Gallery\, located at 128 E. Sixth St.\, will have a Kid’s Art Carnival in its park with a variety of booths with hands-on activities\, make-and-take projects\, games and prizes. Carnival tickets will be 25 cents each. \n  \nGrand Central Senior Center\, located at 122 E. Sixth St.\, will host a quilt show inside its facility. \nNewton Murals and Arts Project will host “Art in the Parking Lot” at 127 E. Sixth St. They will have small murals set up along the outside wall of Enz Auto Glass for the Second Time Around Silent Auction\, a raffle for a mural and other activities. They will also be accepting donations to fund their next large-scale project. \n  \nAdmission to the Downtown Art Carnival is free; there are additional costs for food and tickets to the Kid’s Art Carnival. \n  \nThe Downtown Art Carnival is presented by the Newton Area Arts and Culture organization. \nFor more information\, visit www.tonewton.com.
